Arizona is said to have expansive soil, which means that the ground can slightly shift due to changes in the water table below ground, and I am sure flash floods that may occur after monsoons!
Most of the homes that have been built in the past 10 or so years have what is called a “post tension slab”

The theory behind the post tension slab is that the foundation of the house moves as 1 piece. No more of that pesky corner of the house falling off! Its either all or none!

A post tension slab is when there are thick wires and cables crisscrossed every 18 inches to 24 inches. The concrete is then poured over the cables, and around 75% of the cure period, the cables are pulled to 25000 pounds per square inch with a hydraulic jack.

Most of the time the driveway and the back patio are made on regular slabs, not part of the post tension.

A dead giveaway of a post tension slab is the engraving generally in the garage that that says "no cutting or drilling". The cables are under extreme tension, cutting or piercing one can be hazardous to one's health!

Here are a couple of pics of what will soon be a post tension slab! Just add concrete!
